Philippine-based
company Appsir, Inc. has announced the release of psychological thriller game
Dere.exe, a fourth-wall breaking thriller in the style of sequences in
Undertale and Imscared, among other indie horror based titles. The game hides
this psychological horror in the wrapping of a charmingly-styled retro 2D platformer.
Offering
a horror experience that brings a new dimension of immersion to the player,
making their phones an active participant in the game, Dere.exe appears to be a
game with a lot of narrative value, but also a terrifying experience. The game
would probably be particularly scary if you have an expensive mobile phone, as
any app that appears to be buggy and glitchy and promise to haunt your device
would be. With a fourth-wall breaking narrative, Dere.exe promises to involve
the player directly in their own horror.
For
those willing to take the scary plunge, Dere.exe is now available not only on
mobile phone app stores but also for the PC. The trailer for the game, shown
below, shows the nature of the game; a tough-as-nails platformer on the surface,
but with sinister and immersive horror guts that form a narrative experience
not unlike other indie horror titles, but still one that is seldom seen enough
to be interesting.
It is always interesting to see new and unique ways to interact with games, and seeing one that promises to break the fourth wall and directly involve the player in the story makes Dere.exe particularly noteworthy. While the execution of the game remains to be seen, as a horror experience it will be intriguing to see how the trope of games that blur lines between reality and the game world continues to develop.
